Bed bugs, also known as Cimex lectularius (Cimicidae) are small parasitic insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals including humans. They get their name from being commonly found in human habitats, in beds, mattresses and sofas.

Bed bugs are a growing problem in many cities including CITY as their population is increasing year by year. As a result, more and more people are affected by bed bugs every year.

How To Identify Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are only a few mm long, light brown colour and sometimes when in their earlier stages of development plain white. Adult bed bugs can have a dark brown colour and they can turn red after feeding when they are full of their hosts blood.

How Did I Get Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs may enter a new residence as stowaways when a second hand or used linens, clothing, furniture, luggage or carpets are transferred into a new location. Even the cleanest and best well-kept residences can get bed bugs. The insects can even enter a unit through holes in the walls, pipes or from under the flooring. To avoid bringing bed bugs into your home make sure you check every single item you bring into your home thoroughly.

If you too have a bed bug problem, don’t be alarmed. We offer effective bed bug extermination solutions that will get rid of the bed bugs once and for all. Call: 647-559-2456.

What Areas Bed Bugs Usually Bite

Bed bug bites can be itchy, burning and distressing but other than minor reactions bed bugs do not spread or transmit diseases. The symptoms typically go away on their own although they may be eased with antihistamines and topical antiseptic creams. Having good information about bed bug bites can help you identify the pest that has been wreaking havoc while you sleep.

What Bed Bug Bites Look Like

Bed bugs live off human blood but can feed on rats, mice, pets and other animals if a human host is unavailable. The bug injects an anesthetic during the bite which is why you don’t feel the bed bug feeding while you sleep. The insects’ saliva also contains an anti-coagulant which temporarily reduces the time it takes for your blood to clot, allowing it sufficient feeding time and quantity.

Bed bug bites vary from one person to the next with some people not showing any symptoms at all. Generally speaking, bed bug bites appear as small, raised, itchy red bumps. These often appear in a linear or zigzag pattern. Some people may take a few days to a week after getting bitten for the symptoms to appear.

How Bed Bugs Bite

The bed bug has two long beaks which pierce into the host’s skin. One of the beaks delivers an anesthetic and anticoagulant agent to help avoid detection and stimulate blood flow respectively. The other beak extracts the blood. The bed bug feeds in about 3 to 10 minutes before scurrying off into its hiding place until the next meal which could be in three days to a week or more. Bed bugs do not attach to human hosts as ticks do.

Common Areas Bed Bugs Bite

Bed bugs prefer to bite areas of the skin that are exposed while you sleep. They don’t like to get under clothes where they may get trapped or suffocated. Common areas you can expect bed bug bites include;

  • Neck
  • Arms
  • Shoulders
  • Leg

Be careful about scratching the bite as this can cause a secondary infection.

People become more sensitive to bed bug bites as the pests continue to bite. About 70% of people don’t show any symptoms when bitten but this quickly changes as the bed bugs come out to feed more often. The bites alone don’t confirm you have bed bugs since these could be from scabies, mosquitoes or spiders. Household chemicals also cause similar reactions to people with sensitive skin.

Confirming Bed Bug Bite

There are a number of features when seen together, indicate that the skin irritation was almost certainly caused by a bed bug.

The pattern is, of course, the first. There are a clear middle and a red ring surrounding it. The bite is itchy and located where you are most likely to be uncovered like the neck, shoulders, legs and arms. Bite marks under your feet may be scabies or some other pest since bed bugs rarely bite here. Finally, additional signs of bed bugs on your mattress including blood stains, small brown spots indicating fecal matter and actual presence of bed bugs can help to positively identify the pest.

Hire a Professional Bed Bug Exterminator in Mississauga

The foundation of any successful extermination campaign is positively identifying the pest. It is easy to confuse bed bug bites with those of other pests. Even the actual bed bugs can be confused for carpet beetles or cockroach larvae among others. It is best to have an exterminator inspect your property thoroughly as soon as you suspect you have pests.

Over-the-counter pesticides are ineffective, one of the reasons why bed bugs have made a comeback after 40 years of near extinction. Only licensed professionals have the authority to buy and use potent active ingredients that guarantee successful extermination. Speak to the exterminator about how you can avoid bed bugs in the future.
